Without a doubt one of the icons of ‘50s collectibles, the Tri-Five Chevys (1955-57) offered something for everyone. This was top-of-the-line for Chevrolet in 1957, and 47,562 buyers signed on the bottom line for a Bel Air convertible. Designers cleverly used the same car underneath as its 1955 and 1956 counterparts, albeit with updated styling. Bel Air models received a trendy gold-anodized grille and “Bel Air” body-side script. Dagmar bumper guards, named after a buxom blond actress, mimicked those on pricey Cadillacs, and at the rear were the only vertical tailfins to ever appear on a Chevrolet.
Bodies were 1.5 inches lower than in 1956, thanks to a switch from 15- to 14-inch wheels, though the wheelbase remained the same at 115 inches. Buyers had a choice of eight engines including an optional 283 HP Rochester Ramjet fuel-injected 283 CI V-8—the first factory engine to offer 1 HP per cubic inch of displacement. Comparatively speaking, production was limited as the fuel injection option, RPO 578, was a $550 upgrade. Some sources indicate just 68 Bel Air Fuelie convertibles were built for 1957.
Painted in an “Oh-So-Fifties” color of Larkspur Blue, this lovely Bel Air has a matching, power-operated convertible top and a two-tone Larkspur Blue and Harbor Blue interior. It benefits from a frame-off restoration and is powered by the highly desirable fuel-injected 283 CI V-8, which is mated to a 3-speed manual, column-shift transmission. In addition to its proper full-size spinner wheel covers, it features period-correct wide whitewall tires. Inside, one will find a set of Chevrolet protective floor mats, a heater and defroster, a split bench seat and a signal-seeking Wonderbar AM radio. All that’s left to do is hop in, turn the key and make a splash at cruise night. Texto da Mecum.
